Please note that you do not need to be a licensed pilot in order to become a member. We also require support for a number of non-flying activities such as fundraising, sourcing and planning missions, media liason and logistics.
Bateleur's contribute greatly to the protection of the Environment by giving policy makers, scientists, media representatives, community leaders and activists a birds-eye view of our portion of the planet. We are a registered Section 21 Company and our members are mostly volunteer pilots.
If you would like to become a member of the volunteer pilots corps in order to fly missions on behalf of The Bateleurs, the following minimum requirements must be satisfied -
- Logged at least 400 hours of which at least 250 hours must be pilot in command, minimum 20 hours on type and current
- Own or have use of a suitable aircraft
- Maintain at least R1,000,000 liability insurance and provide annually a certificate of insurance with a 10 day notice of cancellation clause to The Bateleurs
- Execute and return a volunteer pilot agreement to The Bateleurs. This agreement states that the pilot is not an employee or agent of The Bateleurs and is acting on his/her own behalf
- If requested, submit to a pilot evaluation.
 - Logged at least 90 hours to fly a mission without a passenger OR logged at least 120 hours to fly a mission with passenger
- Own or have use of a suitable microlight
- Maintain at least R1,000,000 liability insurance and provide annually a certificate of insurance with a 10 day notice of cancellation clause to The Bateleurs
- Execute and return a volunteer pilot agreement to The Bateleurs. This agreement states that the pilot is not an employee or agent of The Bateleurs and is acting on his/her own behalf
- If requested, submit to a pilot evaluation.
Kindly note that The Bateleurs is unfortunately unable to reimburse pilots for their time and the use of their aircraft. Unfortunately it might be some time before you are asked to fly a mission, depending on demand and locality.
