What an extraordinary mission we bring to you in our last newsletter of the year - the Maputo Elephant Count with 14 Microlights!

I felt a lump rise in my throat as Michelle said to me "you would have been so proud to see that squadron of little planes flying into the middle of nowhere and the convey of vehicles arriving. It really was quite something." Indeed. And proud, too, that we are able to help in the quest to secure more habitat for Elephant.

The mission is more than likely a 'world first' of it's kind and it is exciting to think how this expertise may be used in the future in other parts of the Continent to help obtain a census of Elephant.

We need to thank everyone who went along for their time and effort and personal contribution to the exercise, but especially we need to thank Joe Holmes without whom it would not have been possible. Well done, General Joe.

Because of the many contributions, all from different perspectives, from participants in the Maputo Elephant Count, we have decided to limit this newsletter to the mission and urge you to "click here for more" - there is some good stuff.

Next year we will report on the second flight over the illegal granite mining near Britz, the flight over the Wild Coast area for potential mining, and the flight over Admiralty Reserve near Margate.
Fly safely over the holiday period and Compliments of the Season,

A Pilot's Perspective - Marc Bow

Every few weeks a little email pops up on my screen with the title Bateleurs Missions, this as it must be for all the other pilots is always reason for excitement. Here again is the prospect of another adventure to tear us away from the hectic life most of us lead.

When the highly regarded Joe Holmes told me about the Bateleurs mission to the Maputo Elephant reserve I didn't hesitate a moment. Here again was the opportunity to get away with my plane and do some serious flying again.

For many pilots, particularly of microlights, the idea of venturing more than a fuel tanks distance from the airfield is a daunting prospect, especially alone. So when a mission like this comes up I jump at it as a chance to venture away with other pilots, some less and some more experienced than I and fly to places I wouldn't dare venture alone. For me, part of the attraction of flying for the Bateleurs is the satisfaction of that fighter pilot wanna be in me, the chance to feel like , I'm flying in an organised mission based squadron, controlled and to the book with a mission objective in hand.

  • Thanks for the Greatest Experience - Carol Zeederberg

I echo the comment I overheard on the radio as the first lot of pilots were signing off after completing the first leg of the mission  "Thanks for the greatest experience in a Microlight ever"  Although my experience in the Microlight was not counting elephant, but rather just a flip back to the border, I have to say Microlighting is FUN FUN FUN

After returning from the "great Adventure " in Mozambique I had to spend a few days in bed with the flu. Imagine my heart-ache when I read the following insert from the book I was reading "The Dressing Station" by Dr Jonathan Kaplan.
